Reading Gymnastics

Adapted from Mozart’s Musical Dice Game

Description:

The challenge of reading is more than the comprehension of the pitches on the staff. An important part of reading is the motion of the eyes and the skill of keeping the eye ahead of where the fingers are in the music. Mozart created a music dice game in which he presented several possible options for each bar of a short minuet. Using this idea, a “grid” was developed for each section of the string orchestra. Read from left to right any of the four bars in each column. Several games are suggested below, or you can create your own.
